Favipiravir (mild-moderate case )

Glenmark becomes the first pharmaceutical company in India to receive regulatory approval for oral antiviral Favipiravir, for the treatment of mild to moderate covid-19. Fabiflu is the first medication to be approved and commercially available for the treatment of covid 19.

Favipiravir, sold under the brand  name Fabiflu, Avigan or Abigan, is an antiviral medication used to treat influenza in Japan (approved in 2014). But generic name of this medicine is Avifavir. This medicine work for mild to migrate case only it does not work in serious condition of covid-19. The drug is priced at rupees 3500 for a pack of 34 tablets (rupees 103 per tablet). It will be available in retail chemist stores and hospitals coma but it is a prescription drug. It offers rapid reduction in viral load within 4 days and provides faster symptomatic improvement.

It has been investigated worldwide, to know how effective it is?
Studies from Japan, Russia and China have Shown positive results. Currently, the drug is the subject of at least 18 clinical trials involving more than 3000 patients across India, USA, Canada, Italy, China france, UK and other countries. Italy and China officially approved Favipiravir and commercially launched in Bangladesh.

The drug works by short-circuiting the production mechanism of certain RNA viruses such as influenza. It hinders the activity of "RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp)" of SARS COV2. This leads to the blocking of viral replication and thus reduces the viral load and severity of the disease. In Japan, Avigan's(Favipiravir) use has been strictly controlled by the government due to potential risk for Teratogenicity.
Teratogen - A drug or other substance capable of interfering with the development of a foetus, causing birth defects and also destructive to the rapid cell growth foetuses.



Dexamethasone ( severe case )

'Dexamethasone tables 0.5 mg' world's first life saving COVID Drug. 

The chief and widely-used steroid called Dexamethasone has become the first drug-shown to be able to save lives among covid-19 patients in what scientists said is a 'major breakthrough' in the coronavirus pandemic. Around 2100 hospital patients were given Dexamethasone, compared with more than 4300 who were not. And the results showed that- for patient on ventilators, it cut the risk of death by a third. For those on Oxygen, it cut the risk of death by a fifth. Research said if the drug has been used to treat patients in the UK from the start of the pandemic, up to 5,000 lives could have been saved.

It is a drug that release inflammation in various parts of the body. It is used specifically to decrease swelling, associated with tumors of the spine and brain, and to treat eye inflammation. It could be of huge benefit in developing countries with high number of covid-19 patients too. Its price is regulated under the drug price control order and is around rupees 5-6 per injection. World Health Organisation said- important to use only for sever Corona virus cases.



Coronil and swasari vati

Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurved launched   'coronild and swasari vati' , first ayurvedic medicine for coronavirus on 23rd June at a press conference in yogpeeth, haridwar.

According to the company- The company claims that it is a first evidence-based ayurvedic medicine. Aacharya Balkrishna said - 'We gave medicine for prevention and it was evidence based. Several Corona patients tested negative they were administered our medicine we have collected clinical data of its effect on patients from different age groups. We are now going to conduct controlled clinical trails'.

Results of trails -  Baba Ramdev said 'we conducted a clinical case study, and found 69%  patients recovered in 3 days and100% patients recovered 7 days. The coroner kit will be made available at just rupees 545 says Aacharya Balkrishna. What's included in this medicine? According to Balkrishna it includes - Ashwagandha, Giloy, Basil(Tulsi), Swasiri juice and Anu oil. Aacharya said its research has also been published in the Biomedicine Pharmacotherapy International General in America.

If it works it might be the biggest contribution of Aayurveda to mankind in modern times.



Vaccin

According to World health organisation's latest count, 13 experimental vaccines are being tested in humans and more than 120 others are in earlier stages of development even as the the infections near 9 million, including 468,484 deaths. The ones develop by Moderna Inc, China's sinovac Biotech and UK's Oxford Astrazeneca - are set to enter late-stage trails.

The World health organisation's. (WHO) 'solidarity Trail' , the UK's ' RECOVERY Trail' and the US's 'operation wrap speed' are three of the leading scientific efforts pivoting research in the batlic against covid-19. If all goes well we may have a vaccine for emergency use by November 2020 and its distribution will also begin from 2021.
